How Cyclones are named in India?
Its very interest to know how the cyclones are named. What is the process to name a Cyclone and who decides on which name to use. Let us first go in Some history
Difference between Cyclones, Hurricanes and typhoons
All mean the same. Storms over South Pacific and Indian Ocean are known as cyclones. In the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, and eastern North Pacific, the term hurricane is used. The same type of disturbance in the Northwest Pacific is called a typhoon.
How Cyclones were named in the past
In the past cyclones were named on the place where they had they landfall. But it became confusion and communication with people was difficult. In the 27th session held in Muscat, Oman countries in region of Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea decided to name Cyclones in the region.
Which countries were involved in the decision
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Oman and Maldives. Each country provided 8 names.
What were the credentials to decide the name
- The name must be short, which is easier to spell and readily understood when broadcasted.
- The name must not be linked to any region or a name which pronounce danger
A total of 64 names were decided and 1st name was implemented in 2004 (which was named by Bangladesh). As of date 58 names have been used of which latest being used is Vayu (which hit Gujarat coast on 13th June 2019).
What is the process of usage of these names
Names are used in sequential manner. After Cyclone vayu, 6 more names are left to be used. New names will be released once all names are used.
