About Indian Chess Grandmaster:

Born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Gukesh’s parents, Rajnikanth and Padma, are accomplished professionals in the medical field, with his father being an ear, nose, and throat surgeon and his mother a microbiologist. Gukesh embarked on his chess journey at seven and is currently a student at Velammal Vidyalaya in Mel Ayanambakkam, Chennai. Journey to Grandmaster:

Gukesh’s achievements have been remarkable. In 2015, he triumphed in the Under-9 category at the Asian School Chess Championships. In 2018, he won the World Youth Chess Championships in the Under 12 section. His dominance continued with five gold medals at the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championships across rapid, blitz, team, and classical formats.

By March 2018, Gukesh had secured the International Master title at the 34th Cappelle-la-Grande Open. Making history, he became the second-youngest grandmaster on January 15, 2019, missing the record by only 17 days compared to Sergey Karjakin.

Gukesh’s prowess extended into 2021 when he emerged victorious at the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour, Gelfand Challenge. His exceptional journey continued in August 2022, starting the 44th Chess Olympiad with a perfect 8/8 score and leading India to victory over the top-ranked U.S. team. He secured a gold medal on the 1st board with 9 out of 11 points.

In an impressive turn, Gukesh defeated Magnus Carlsen, the reigning World Champion, in the Aimchess Rapid tournament in October 2022. The young prodigy demonstrated his skills in the WR Masters tournament in February 2023, tying for first place with Levon Aronian and Ian Nepomniachtchi.

August 2023 marked Gukesh’s participation in the Chess World Cup. Despite reaching Round 5, he was eventually bested by Carlsen. Notably, during the tournament, he became the youngest player to achieve a rating exceeding 2750.
