Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), The institute wasestablished in 1936 by Clifford Manshardt, an American missionary who pioneered several urban community programs near Nagpada in Bombay in the 1920s. Manshardt’s initiatives were supported by Dorabji Tata, the philanthropist son of Jamsetji Tata. The Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, as the institute was then called, was initially housed in the premises of the Nagpada Neighborhood House and Mr. Manshardt was its first director. In 1944, the institute was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). In 1964, it was recognized as a deemed university by the University Grants Commission. TISS had 20 students in first batch; now TISS has more than 1,500 students. Today TISS has postgraduate and doctoral programs in 12 different areas under the social sciences umbrella. It has more than 1,500 students and 140 teachers. TISS celebrated platinum jubilee last year. With support from the UNICEF, the TISS is developing a State Resource Network on Micro-Planning to support people.

TISS invaluable services were availed by Amritsar refugee, Andaman and Nicobar tsunami, Kabul university, Sustained mountain development, planning of government, WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, NGO’s across world. The TISS is recognized by the World Health Organization as a collaborating Centre for Health, Policy Research and Training. The UNAIDS Centre for Behavioral Research on HIV/AIDS is also located at TISS. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has always reached out to support people affected by natural and human-made crisis. Way back in 1947, the Institute sent a faculty and student team to Kurukshetra to work with refugees who came from Pakistan. Recalling the work done, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who had observed the TISS team at work, said at the inauguration of Deonar Campus in 1954: We found the difference in their work and the work of many others who were earnest and had done their best, but who did not have the training to do it well. There is a difference between the trained workers and the merely enthusiastic workers.Since then, the TISS has responded to various crises such as floods, riots, cyclones, earthquakes and industrial disasters in different parts of the country. The Institute’s work is centered around relief management; psychosocial support to women, children and other vulnerable groups; assessment of loss and impact to lives, property, livelihoods, environment and infrastructure; rehabilitation and development needs; mobilization of human resources for relief and rehabilitation work; facilitating community participation in the reconstruction and rehabilitation process; policy and program development support to government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs); coordination of civil society participation; training and capacity-building of personnel engaged in relief and rehabilitation work; publication and documentation; and conflict resolution and peace building initiatives. The TISS has worked in disasters not just in Maharashtra, but in various parts of the country. The academic calendar is suitably modified to ensure participation of students and staff alike. Vacations are shortened and the entire Institute, in a spirit of co-operation, works longer hours to ensure that student exams and the academic schedule are not really disturbed. Expenses are partly met by faculty members and students and donors come forward to support this involvement. In most instances, the Institute has worked closely with State Governments and the district administration. In recent years, NGOs have also recognized the role of the Institute and its volunteer teams and have sought to collaborate. In Hindu mythology there is a famous incident of Samudra manthan process, whose basic objective was to extract AMRIT from MAHASAGAR. The mission was carried by Gods as well as demons. But unfortunately in the process of extracting AMRITA , Poison was also extracted and if poison and amrit would have got mixed then mission would go failure. At that point of time Lord Mahadeva came to rescue and took the responsibility to filter poison and mission was a great success. Similarly human mankind is also composed of two kinds of people Gods (The privileged ones) and demons (The dejected ones). When human mankind works for human fraternity growth ( Amrit extraction ), there is lot of frustration , lack of morale or fatigue among dejected or under privileged sections of society (Poison is also expected outcome). Therefore there is an urgent, eternal, omnipresent omnipotent need to extract this poison from society. That’s why social science is required for survival of human fraternity. Social work in today’s world has established itself as a significant fully fledged profession at par with any other profession. As the world is fast becoming increasingly materialistic, devoid of human sentiments and emotions, with people growing more and more self-centered, yet another global trend is becoming distinctly evident- how to save this result oriented and materialistic society. It is creating an emergency requirement of young lot who want to do something for the welfare of the society. The world is moving in a fast pace as far as economy is considered taking care of modernization , liberalization and globalization but human dimension of modernization , liberalization and globalization is ignored and is in reverse gear. The human dimension of globalization has been largely ignored. Some have argued that globalization was expected to bring about a fundamental transformation in human living standards and quality of life but it has merely resulted in perhaps greater interconnectedness and little else. Unless and until there is some system to filter out frustration , lack of morale or fatigue from the society the human mankind will not develop on sustained basis effectively.
The job market: TISS
TISS has never boasted about 100% placements. Some of the who’s who of the corporate world visit the campus and pick up students with excellent salaries. Students are picked up for the HR departments of global bigwigs like PwC, E&Y, P&G, Wipro, Microsoft, Deloitte, Novartis etc. Many NGOs also visit the campus in search of students. Although the packages may not exactly be high, job satisfaction is said to be immense. The summer placement procedure at TISS is quite commendable. A number of major global players like PwC, E&Y, Johnson and Johnson, Marico, JMPC, Microsoft, Wipro, etc recruit students for their HR departments. Job market from TISS is dynamic and varied. An advisor to Action Aid might take home anything above Rs 1, 00,000 per month as salary but on other side few might earn just Rs 20000 per month. It is the funding and policy agencies that corner the cake. There are centers for rehabilitation for drug addicts, orphaned children and people with disabilities. Counseling, both educational and psychological, is required these days by a large section of the population. There are opportunities in health care, community policing, adoption, environmental protection, culture, and so on. The social sector consists of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and institutions providing services to different sections of society. Many are engaged in research and publishing while others are active in solving problems at the grass root level. An idealistic youngster who wants to do something for the country may, thus, be attracted to the social sector. Fortunately, it is now more than an occupation of the idle and is getting highly professionalized.Salaries have been soaring, with generous infusion of funds from the government and foreign agencies. There is a great satisfaction in doing something for others, which cannot be equaled or compensated by any remunerative job. Even those working in full-time jobs want to do some social work in their spare time. It may be said that it is indeed a noble gesture to indulge in working for others or lend a helping hand to those who may not be as privileged as we are. The scope of social work is very wide. There is a dire need for people who can provide help to the disadvantaged members of the society. Hence career from TISS is always secured. The scope and role of social sciences will go on increasing forever. Social work is among those fields where Job opportunities differ with the kind of specialization that a social worker has chosen. Specialists in medical aid and psychiatric social work can make a career in hospitals, clinics, counseling centers, mental hospitals, old age homes and similar institutions. Specialists SW professional in the specialized field of criminology can opt for a career in prisons, correction cells and similar institutions. Those with specialized knowledge in labor welfare segment can work as labor welfare representatives in the private and corporate sector including MNCs and HR department of various labor-centric industries. Job opportunities are also available with NGOs working for the development of society. Getting into academics and teaching to masses about the subject is another option available to professionals associated with this field. Lastly, premier international organizations like WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF and other international organizations with similar goals targeted at developing nations, require social workers in their developmental campaigns and projects.
