2016 ICC World Cup T20 : Important Points

The sixth Twenty 20 World Championship is being hosted by India from 8 March to 3 April 2016. T20 is the shortest format of cricket and the gap between the world championships is only two years. The ICC has accorded international status to all Twenty 20 matches.

The first T20 World Championship was held in South Africa in 2007 and India lift the cup defeating arch rival Pakistan. It is interesting to note that no team has won the event twice.

The previous championships are won by following countries:

  • India (2007)
  • Pakistan (2009)
  • England (2010)
  • West Indies (2012)
  • Sri Lanka (2014)

It is for the third time in succession that the Twenty 20 championship is being held in the Indian sub-continent. There are seven cities that will host T20 matches in India, which are given below:

  • Kolkata
  • Bangalore
  • Mumbai
  • Dharamshala
  • New Delhi
  • Mohali
  • Nagpur

 

As per 2014 edition, the 2016 World Twenty20 will feature sixteen teams. Ten teams qualified automatically through their status as full members of the International Cricket Council, while another six qualified through the 2015 World Twenty20 Qualifier.

Alongside T20 World Cup tournament, Women T20 World Cup is also being organized in India from March 15, 2016 – April 3, 2016, in which a total of 10 countries participated.




Important Points to be Noted:

  • The final match will be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
  • A total 16 teams will participate in this tournament.

  • Final Match will be played in Eden Garden.
