Pronouns, its uses and its types
Pronoun is a word that replaces the name of a person or Objects. Pronouns are an important part of sentence formation and asked in competitive examinations in cloze test, rearrange the sentences.
Personal Pronouns:
I, He, She, we, they, have the forms me, him, her, us, them
E.g.
- You and I must work together
- He invited my sister and me to the dinner
- Ankit is 2 year older than me
- You are wiser than her
- You hate her as much as I
Use Of IT
- For things without life
e.g. I have a book. It has pictures in it - For Animals, as
e.g. The horse fell and broke its leg - As a provisional subject before the verb ‘to be’ when the real subject follows
Eg. It is our duty to respect our elders
e.g. It is better to die than to beg - To give emphasis to Noun or Pronoun following
E.g. It was I who first protested - In speaking of time or weather
E.g. It is raining.
Reflexive and Emphasizing Pronouns
These are: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves
Use of Reflexive Pronouns
- I hurt Myself
- You will hurt yourselves
- They hurt Themselves
Use of Emphasizing Pronouns
- The king himself gave her the medal
- Sita herself opened the door
- We will see to it ourselves.
Relative Pronouns
These are: Who, whose, whom, which, that, which
- ‘Who’ is used for person’s only
E.g. The man who is honest succeeds in Life - ‘Which’ is used for Animals and for things without life
E.g. The horse which Ali brought last year is white - ‘That’ is used for persons, animals and things
E.g. Happy is the man that avoids bad company - ‘What’ is used for things only, mostly hidden
E.g. What is one man’s meat is another man’s poison
