Percentage is main topic in quant section in all competitive exams like Bank PO & clerical, CRT, SSC & various other exams. It is widely used in competitive exam because it shows comparative analysis of data.

Basically percent means change data in respect of 100 .100 is the base on which we show the data to compare or analysis.
e.g. 10 out of 20. To change this in percent
10/20 *100 = 50 %

This show that 10 is the 50% of 20.Now it is easy to understand rather than 10 out of 20.So with the help of percent we can simplified information , changing into understandable form .It is widely used in all the sector.

Absolute value change –

it is actual change in value.

Percent change = absolute value change / original quantity *100

For e.g. if profit I first year is 2000 /- and in second year profit is 2200/- then the absolute change in value is 200/- so percent change is

200/2000*100 = 10%

Difference between percent change & percent point change –

Percent change is increase or decrease in a quantity and percent point change is a change in percent figures of same quantity.

Percent rule for calculation –

The ability to calculate through addition in percent is much more important, in most of problems the answer in approximate terms, in this situation this is much more important tactics to solve question.

This process contains commonsense process .For E.G.-

To solve 357/1268*100 first we look on 357/1268

10% of 1268 is 126 then 357 is more than 126 by commonsense we can assume that it is nearly 30% because 126*3 is 378

So it is 28.15%

It is easy trick to solve heavy calculation in quant section as well as in DI. In this process we focus upon to spilt numerator or denominator to solve case in easy way , but this demanded practice to familiar with this.

 Short tricks –

  1. r% change can be canceled out by 100*r/ (100+r) % change in another direction. Eg: An increase of 25% in prices can be cancel out by a reduction of [100×25 / (100+25)] = 20% reduction in consumption.
  2. If a number ‘x’ is successively changed by a%, b%, c%…then

Final value = x*(1+a/100)(1+b/100)(1+c/100)

  1. The net change after two successive changes of a% and b% is (a + b + a * b / 100)

1. Vijay Kumar is the flag bearer for Indian contingent at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games

2. Sanjita Chanu wins India’s first Gold medal at 2014 Commonwealth Games.

3. Vikas Gowda became India’s only second male athlete to win a gold at the Commonwealth Games after the legendary Milkha Singh won the 440 yard gold way back in 1958 at Cardiff.

4. Parupalli Kashyap became the first Indian man in 32 years to win badminton gold at the Games.

5. Dipa Karmakar scripts history, wins first gymnastic medal for India at Commonwealth Games. She bagged a bronze in the vault event.

The concept of ratio & proportion is an important for the aptitude exams like Bank PO & CRT exams. Questions based on this topic have asked individually or in data interpretation question set.

Ratio:

The ratio of number x to a number y is defined as

x / y

Important properties of ratio –
  1. If we multiply the numerator & the denominator of a ratio by the same number ,the ratio remain unchanged

VARIATION:

Two quantities A and B are said to be varying with each other if there exists some relationship between A and B such that the change in A and B is uniform and governed by some rule.

Some typical examples of variation

  1. Area of a square is , hence area of a square is directly proportional to .
  2. If the number of men on a project is doubled, the number of days will be halved. This shows indirect variation.
  3. Expenses of a hostel are partly constant and partly vary with the number of occupants.

Direct proportion :

A varies directly to B, and then A is said to be in direct proportion to B. It is written as

A   or A = kB

It can be understood with the typical example of percentage relating to expenses, consumption and price of the article. If A is directly proportional to B, it simply means that the ratio   is constant. If A becomes double, B also become double; if A is reduced to one third, then B is also reduced to one third etc. Now suppose A is proportional to , it means

A = k or the ratio of A and ,  is constant.

Now take a different case, suppose z is directly proportional to x, when y is constant and directly proportional to ,, when x is constant, then

Combining both the relations, we get,

Inverse variation:

If A is inversely proportional to B, it can be written as:
