Correct Use of Some Prepositions with Examples

Prepositions are a very important part of English sentence formation. With exam point of view their knowledge is very very important to solve questions on cloze test, find the grammatical error etc. So here are a few prepositions examples with their correct use.

Prepositions Examples

  1. At, In
    1) With reference to time,
    At is used for a point of time, In for a period of time
    At In
    1) He came at daybreak
    2) At an early hour this morning the hall was full
    He was born in 1990
    He will start at Five O’ Clock in the morning




    2) With reference to space, at is used for small and less important places, villages, small towns.
    In is used for large places, countries and large towns

    At In
    He lives at Dev Nagar
    He lives at Dev Nagar in Jaipur
    He lives in Jaipur
    He lives at Dev Nagar in Jaipur
  2. By, With:
    By is used after verbs to express agent or order of action expressed by the verb. With is used with the instrument with which action is done
    By With
    The farmer was killed by a thief with his knife The tree was cut by a man with an axe
  3. On, Upon
    On is used in speaking of things at rest. Upon is used in speaking of things in motion
    On Upon
    I sat on the ground The cat sprang upon the table
  4. In, Into:
    In implies a state of rest or position inside anything. Into denotes motion towards of inside of anything.
    In Into
    He is in his room He fell into the river
  5. In, Within:
    In denotes at the end of some future period, Within means ‘before the end of’
    In Within
    He will return in a week (at close of week) He will return within a week (in less than a week)
  6. After, In:
    ‘After’ is used to denote after time is passed where as ‘In’ denotes at the end of period of time in the future.
    After In
    She will come after a week She will come in a week
  7. Since, For:
    ‘Since’ is used to denote a point of time in the past, For can be used to demote a point of time in present, future or past
    Since For
    They have been sleeping since morning They have been married for 25 years
  8. Since, From:
    ‘From’ can be used in present or future time.
    Since From
    I have not met her since last week He school begins from today
  9. Before, For:
    Before is used in negative and affirmative sentences alike to denote a point of future time. For is used in Negative sentence to denote a period of future time. For is used in negative sentence to denote a period of future time
    Before For
    I shall be there before 6 o’ clock I shall not be there for (not before) an hour
  10. Between, among. Between is used when 2 objects are there, where as among is used for more than 2 objects
    Between Among
    A quarrel arose between two friends The brave soldiers quarreled among themselves
  11. Beside, Besides. beside Means by the side of; besides mean in addition to;
    Beside Besides
    He sat beside me Besides helping her, he helped her with money.
