Finally After a long time period, Indian Railways through its Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) have announced a massive recruitment to fill 18252 vacancies that come under NTPC category. Although many of us have seen Assistant Station Master, Reservation clerks, Goods guards, Commercial Apprentice etc. earlier but not much in known about their job profile, salary, duties & future prospects. So, here we are presenting a complete job profile for different posts such as ASM, TA, CA, Goods Guard, and ECRC which come Under RRB, which will be very helpful to fill up your preference list in RRB.

Goods guard is a person who is responsible of safe delivery of the entire cargo location on that train. His Duties includes:

  • To check the entire formation for anything that can endanger safe running of trains.
  • To check that doors of wagons are closed.
  • To check the brake continuity with Loco Pilot.
  • Sign the Brake Power certificate (BPC) after ensuring sufficient brake power.
  • Constantly monitor the formation on the run for any abnormalities.
  • Get the vehicle guidance (VG – written document containing numbers of wagons, their tare weight, load tonnage of individual wagons, total tonnage) from Station Master/Yard Master.
  • Prepare train reports like Combined Train Reports, Late Arrival Report.

Salary: The salary of Goods guard is highest among all the other posts.He gets more than 35,000 per month.Once the 7th pay commission is included the Goods Guard salary could rise even further.In many cases newly recruited Goods Guards draws Rs.60,000 per month primarily due to travel and running allowances.

  • When he is promoted to a non-running post like Section Controller his pay is fixed taking into consideration pay element of  Running Allowance, which is highly benefitial for the employee.
  • Guards can also write LDCE exams for Group B Gazetted post of Assistant Opertions Manager(AOM).

Assistant Station Master (ASM)

ASM is the in charge of running of trains at a station. He operates the signals, ensures that everything goes as per the rules laid out. He will be working in shifts. Big stations may have more than one ASM.

The work of ASM is to help the Station Master in managing the railway stations efficiently.His job duties includes:

  • Follows instructions received from controller
  • Supervise the station staff and make sure that all the facilities are in order
  • Passing the trains as per the guidelines laid out in manual
  • Perform necessary inspection to check for any faults and report immediately

Salary: Talking about Assistant Station Master, they are paid 24,000/- approximately per month initially which shall increase as they move up the pay band. After 7th Pay Commission it is expected to touch upto 34000/-

Commercial Apprentice (CA)

Commercial Apprentices are trained as a sort of multi skilled supervisors in the Commercial branch. They will be given 2 year training in different categories of working of Commercial branch – training in duties of Commercial clerks, parcel clerks, goods clerks, catering, commercial inspectors.After 2 years training they will be posted normally as Chief Commercial/Parcel/Goods Clerk even though they can be posted as Commercial inspectors also in principle.

Salary: As per the current Pay scale, The slary of Commercial Apprentice was Rs.27,000 per month which will be increased upto Rs.36,000 per month after the implementation of 7th Pay commission

Career path :  Future promotions to managerial (Gazetted) posts are based on departmental examinations.

Assistant Commercial Manager  Divisional Commercial Manager  ⇒ Senior  Divisional Commercial Manager

Traffic Apprentice (TA)

Traffic Apprentices are trained as a sort of multi skilled supervisors in the Transportation(Operations) branch.They will be given 2 year training in different categories of working of Traffic branch – training as Station Master, Guard, Section Controller, Yard Masters, Traffic inspectors.  They will work short periods as  Station Master, Yard Master and Guard independently during training  also.After 2 years training they will be posted either as Station Master, Yard Master(Now both has been combined) or Section Controller.

Salary: The Traffic Apprentice salary according to their current scale is Rs.27,000.It could increased to Rs.36,000 after 7th Pay commission.

Enquiry cum Reservation Clerk (ECRC)

Job of ECRC is to issue computerized reserved tickets for Railway passengers and to respond to enquiries regarding issue of the same or helping the passengers to plan their travel.

  • The job is only indoor, in most of the places in air conditioned offices.
  • One of the best available posts for ladies in Indian Railways.
  • In most of the stations ECRC works in two shifts on alternate days – from 8-14 hrs and 14-22 hrs.
  • In some small stations where the earnings are less, only one person works in one shift, the timings adjusted suitably as per local conditions.

Salary: The initial salary is around Rs. 18,000 per month.It could increased to Rs.25,000 after 7th Pay commission.
